Barcelona, 22 February 2023. INFINITUM, the high-end resort, located on the Costa Dorada, will become the latest prominent name to appear in the prestigious list of venues that have hosted the SM El Rey Cup which includes some of the most famous golf courses in the country such as El Saler, Real Sevilla or Real Sotogande. This championship, which stands as the best amateur golf event, will take place between February 28 and March 5 within the framework of the INFINITUM Lakes course.
The hosting of this championship confirms the reputation of INFINITUM Golf, as one of the most complete golf offers in Europe and a benchmark for this sport, after the Lakes course successfully hosted a DP World Tour event, the ISPS Handa Championship in Spain -won by the renowned Catalan golfer Pablo Larrazábal- last April. In addition, INFINITUM has also hosted the final stage of the PD World Tour Qualifying School since 2017: last year, Sweden’s Simon Forsström claimed a hard-fought victory with a commendable display of consistency that allowed him to lead a list of 28 players, six of them in a thrilling tie for 23rd place. and earned the coveted pass to the 2023 DP World Tour season.
With more than a century of history, the Copa S.M. El Rey attracts some of the most talented amateur players from around the world, with results contributing to the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Jose Maria Olazabal, winner of the Masters in 1994 and 1999, is among an illustrious list of names to have won the tournament along with fellow Major winners Sergio Garcia, Danny Willet and 2011 Open champion Darren Clarke.
The INFINITUM facilities, which have 45 holes spread over three golf courses, have been considered the best in Europe in recent editions of the World Golf Awards and have the Golf Signature Sanctuary certification of Audubon International. With regard to Lakes -course chosen for the celebration of the Copa del Rey- it is a design by Greg Norman with 18 holes that surround the wetlands of the Sèquia Major, a protected natural area full of water obstacles. As Joaquín Mora Bertrán, INFINITUM’s newly appointed Director of Golf, explains, “as the name suggests, water is a very present danger on the course, and bunkers and undulating greens make Lakes an outstanding experience.”
We recall that the resort of high standing, has just incorporated Joaquín Mora Bertrán as Director of Golf thus assuming the management of the three golf courses, the two clubhouses in addition to the academy. Mora is a student of the second edition of the CME Master in Golf Course Management and has developed an extensive career related to the world of golf: from his condition as a professional player and teacher in the teaching of this sport, to the direction of Catalana Golf, one of the most important companies organizing golf tournaments and events in Spain.
