Located close to Lagos in Western Algarve, Espiche Golf has recently completed major investments to improve the course conditions and experiences for golfers of all handicaps.Luís Rocha, the General Manager of Espiche Golf, said: “This phase of investment, budgeted at €150,000, coincided with our third anniversary. The main changes have been made to the fairways and bunkers to improve the experience for golfers of all handicaps and levels of experience. Another considerable improvement has been the construction of a short game practice area, which will complement the existing facilities at the Driving Range and help to make this a reference in the region. We have also added artificial grass “Huxley Golf” golf mats at the Driving Range to allow the facility to be able to be used all year round, regardless of weather conditions that can adversely affect natural grass.
Some of the other changes made at Espiche Golf include the sealing of the course, to avoid any potential damage caused by wild boars, the widening of paths for buggies in order to protect the tees and greens, and the creation of a new car park to meet the increasing demands from members and visitors.
The investment has also included works to the pump system to increase efficiency throughout, which has also led to obvious environmental benefits.
Espiche Golf won worldwide recognition by becoming the first Golf Club outside of the United States to win a leading position in the “Clubhouse of the Year” awards promoted by the prestigious Golf Inc. Magazine. The Portuguese Golf Club took third place in the category of “New Construction and Refurbishment”.
Efficiency, aesthetics and the overall design concept were among the criteria evaluated by a jury of professionals from architecture, design and golf backgrounds. Espiche Golf Clubhouse first opened in May 2014 and stood out from the hundreds of other Clubhouses around the world thanks to its innovative design, project sustainability and creativity.
**ABOUT ESPICHE GOLF**
Espiche Golf is only a few minutes away from the coast and the historic city of Lagos, in the quiet and less developed are of the western Algarve. The golf course is located within an ecological reserve and combines both a place for an exceptional sporting challenge and a respect for the surrounding natural environment.
Architect Peter Sauerman created the course to integrate seamlessly into the landscape and the entire course was built following an ethos of preservation and sustainability.
Espiche Golf offers golfers a challenging 18 hole, par 72 course. The lakes, rivers and indigenous vegetation enrich the biodiversity of the area and the expansive views across the vineyards and fields and towards the inland mountains of Monchique.
Covering a distance of more than 5,800 metres from the tees and offering numerous possibilities, the course is a pleasure for beginners and casual golfers as well as experienced players with a variety of techniques and intelligent play being well rewarded on the course. The cleverly designed fairways make full use of the natural dips and rolling hillsides, while the brilliantly formed and cleverly located greens require the player to use their full range of golfing techniques. There are two different starting points on the course, from the 1st and 10th tees, and both located in the centre of the course.
