The new Region de Murcia airport in Corvera has broken the million barrier with the figure set to rise as UK flight routes continue throughout the winter season.
The brand new airport and the gateway to the region, which opened in January, continues to flourish with UK airports London Gatwick, Birmingham, Bristol, Southend, Stansted and Manchester all continuing to offer direct routes on the winter schedule.
But it has achieved its ambition of welcoming at least 1m passengers through its doors during 2019 and is expected to rise to around 1.1m by the end of December.
The Costa Cálida or warm coast lives up to its name with temperatures usually at least in the mid-teens at a time as the UK collectively shivers from November to March. And although it may not necessarily be beach or sunbathing weather, it is perfect for walking, exploring, cycling, golf and the abundance of other activities on offer in the varied region.
It also bodes well for a promising 2020 with additional new flight routes expected to be added to the schedule as the UK market grows.
More than 40 per cent of all tourists came from the UK as more people discover the diversity and attraction, which is still considered as one of the lesser-known regions of Spain.
A spokesperson for the Instituto de Turismo de la Región de Murcia, said: “
The winter season is a real opportunity for our UK guests to experience the region, stay active and enjoy everything we have to offer.”
