Quinta Do Lago South
DG PORTUGAL 2024 Editor, Kevin Markham
Located close to Almancil, in the heart of the Algarve, lie two of Quinta do Lago’s three golf courses. The 6,500 metre par-72 South Course was designed by William Mitchell, in 1974, and remains a magnificent, must-play course for all visitors Set in a pine forest, with small swelling hills guiding fairways, it has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times. A multi-million euro investment saw the South closed in 2020, to enable significant renovations. Sustainability was a goal throughout the project, working close with Golf Environment Organisation (GEO).
Water management was a key element of the changes made with new Irrigation Pumps being installed along with enhancements to the existing system – giving greater control and saving precious resources. All bunkers were refurbished, lakes upgraded and fairways reseeded. Along with other improvements the course re-opened in late 2021. The acclaimed gem of the Algarve is now shining more brightly than ever… helped in no small part by a comprehensive refurbishment of the clubhouse.
