Quinta do Lago North
DG PORTUGAL Editor, Kevin Markham
Quinta do Lago North course has a fascinating history and can boast two sets of architects. First came William Mitchell, who was responsible for holes 1 to 5 and 15 to 18, in 1974,
when he also designed the South course. The remaining nine holes were designed by Joseph Lee, in 1989. The signature umbrella pines form elegant corridors while the creeping bent grass fairways are typical to Mediterranean courses. Two new
designers were brought on board after 2010, with the goal of revitalising, updating and enhancing the course. The partnership of Beau Welling and Paul McGinley firmly established the North course as a favourite when it re-opened in 2014. Regular players
here are convinced that someone who draws the ball will succeed best, given the anti-clockwise arrangement of the holes.
Did You Know?
History may tell us that Mitchell and Lee were the
original designers, but what Beau Welling and Paul
McGinley achieved with the 2014 redesign has
secured the North’s future. Love the modern touches.
