Powerscourt (East) – DG IRELAND TOP150 – 2025
Editor, Kevin Markham
The older of the two Powerscourt courses, the East opened in 1996, and the natural shape and surroundings of this elegant Wicklow landscape has been used to enhance its best features. Forest, hills, the estate itself and the Great Sugarloaf are all part
of the experience.
Golfers can expect an exciting start (much like the majestic drive into the estate), a terrific finish and superb greens throughout.
There are impressive views – on the back nine especially – but your attention will need to be on the course at all times as those greens will dazzle you: expect beautifully contoured shapes and some serious tiers… and quick, quick surfaces. Seriously, if you
want to put your putting to the test, step this way.
This is a challenging par 72, measuring 5,930 metres (middle white tees) and it will test you all day long. High tee boxes show off the holes – on 4, 7, 9 and 18, particularly
– and beg for smashing drives, while all of the par threes play down to the green. All four short holes are strong, with the 3rd and 16th particularly outstanding.
FAVOURITE HOLE
The par three 16th is one of only two holes with water (the par
five 17th is the other), and the pond sits directly under the green.
It is framed perfectly with pines and evergreens, and deer may
even be in attendance.
WHAT’S IN THE BAG?
A day for a hot putter. Avoid a 3-putt and celebrate in style.
