MURCAR LINKS DG SCOTLAND 2024 Editor, Kevin Markham
Sitting so close to Royal Aberdeen that golfers could and have accidentally played the wrong course, Murcar Links is a more chaotic and tumbling extension of these gorse-drenched dunes, next to the North Sea. It is also one tricky encounter, especially
for the wayward. Fairways are tight and the hummock-like terrain won’t always be kind to even the best shots. At least such terrain promises high tees, sweet shapes and naturally sited greens…and those greens are beauties, the high-pulpit putting surface
on the par-5 4th being just one highlight. And then there are the views. Murcar Links was originally designed by Archie Simpson and revised by James Braid. It may not be overly long (back tees: 6,500 yards, par 71) but you need to tackle it with care and
common sense. There is simply too much going on to go blasting it about. It may be different to Royal Aberdeen, next door, but this is tons of fun. Oh, and wait for the gorse to blaze yellow to add beauty and fear… which seems only fitting.
